Eligibility and Enrollment
No experience is required. We’ll teach you everything you need to know. All are welcome regardless of experience or ability.
Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for many years or you’re new to yoga, you can enroll in our 200-hour training course. Some people take the course just to learn more about yoga, meditation, mindfulness, relaxation, and more. Others take the training to become certified to teach. All are welcome.
Absolutely! We have students and graduates from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. We welcome students regardless of location or nationality. Graduates of The American Yoga Academy are certified to teach worldwide.
No degrees are required. The American Yoga Academy Yoga Teacher Certification is not dependent upon any other educational requirement. You don’t need to provide evidence of a high school or college degree to get certified as a yoga instructor.
If you can understand spoken English, you can enroll in our course. Instruction is in English; however, we will accept your summaries and written work in the language of your choice.
Also, we have Spanish language materials available. You can read our instructor training manual in Spanish, submit your written work in Spanish, and complete your practical assessment at the end of the course in Spanish.
Not at all! What matters is the passion and desire to learn about health and wellness. The American Yoga Academy has trained and certified instructors of all ages. We have had an 11-year-old and a 92-year-old, and all ages in between! All are welcome regardless of age.
We believe that yoga truly is for everyone. The beauty of yoga is that it encourages us to make the best decisions for our own bodies. Our course teaches everyone regardless of ability, flexibility, or physical limitations. We will work with you to help guide your teaching and personal practice so it is comfortable for you and your future students.
200-Hour Online
Teacher Training Course
The American Yoga Academy Online Teacher Training course is a flexible, self-paced program. You’ll study and learn when it’s comfortable for you, and you can choose to use one of our study plans to help manage your time if you need that structure.
You have a year from enrollment to complete the course. Some students take weeks while others take up to a year. You do not pay extra for taking longer. You will have continued access to the course following graduation.
That is so important! We’ve got that covered with 4 learning modules specifically teaching alignment in the poses, as well as safety and benefits for each pose. Claire shows you every detail of every pose, from fingertips to toes. No detail is left out. You will absolutely be confident and skilled in alignment. And of course, if you have any questions, we are here for you 7 days a week.
All required course materials and lessons are included and provided electronically. There are no additional or hidden fees.
You will receive electronic access to all the materials you’ll need to complete the course. If you require hard copies, you have choices. You can print as much or as little of our digital materials as you like.
Once you are a registered student, you gain access to our online training course. We’ve created a self-paced, flexible, state of the art curriculum. You’ll have clear, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to study the course materials and progress through the 15 online learning modules. Each module is comprised of lectures, demonstrations, short readings, and classes, and takes about 4-7 hours to complete. Besides the 15 learning modules, you’ll also accumulate hours reading course materials; taking “elective” classes to explore different styles of yoga, health, and wellness; and practice teaching family and friends.
Absolutely not. Most online courses provide you with videos to watch and expect you to figure things out on your own. That’s not what you get here with us. We know it’s not easy to become a great teacher without support. Claire and The American Yoga Academy staff are available for you 7 days a week via phone, text, WhatsApp, email, and video calls (like Zoom, FaceTime, or Google Meet). One of the cornerstones of our program is that Claire is a pro at explaining the art of teaching, and Martha is an excellent mentor, available to guide you every step of the way.
When you’re not in the online modules, you’ll be gaining confidence by practice-teaching family and friends in-person or virtually. You’ll also be attending in-person or online elective classes that allow you to customize your experience and focus on what brings you joy. You have choices!
Assignments include short summaries of your learning after each module, and a brief practical exam at the end of the course. We offer guidance every step of the way, and even provide you with sample videos of former students’ successful practical exams. We are available to discuss and answer questions throughout the process. Once you submit your video, you will have a one-on-one meeting with one of our educators via video call or phone to receive guidance and professional feedback. It’s a wonderful experience!
Yes, definitely! You will be confident, accomplished, and certified to teach nationally and internationally. You will also be eligible to apply for membership with Yoga Alliance, an organization that has set standards for yoga instructors and schools. (They are a voluntary member organization; they do not certify teachers to teach.) You will have learned a variety of classes to offer, including yoga, chair yoga, meditation, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, breathwork, and more, and you’ll be certified to teach all of it. Also, The American Yoga Academy Training Course devotes an entire section to “The Business of Yoga” and teaching yoga in every field you can imagine.
